Presented annually, The Ethel Gardiner Manufacturing Scholarship & Award is available to a Halton District School Board graduate who is pursuing a career in manufacturing through pre-apprenticeship training at The Centre. It is intended to provide inspiration and support to a worthy individual interested in learning more about the skilled trades in the manufacturing sector.
2010 Call for Applications
One (1) scholarship of $1,500 will be awarded to a Halton District School Board graduate entering a career in Manufacturing through pre-apprenticeship training at The Centre for Skills Development & Training.

Eligibility and Requirements
The Recipient will:
- be a graduate of a Halton District School Board high school, and currently taking or enrolled to take a program at The Centre,
- be preparing for a career in a skilled trade that is identified as a labour market need in the Halton community (e.g. Manufacturing Sector trades),
- exhibit leadership attributes and be willing to be a presenter, spokesperson, advocate, and/or mentor to
- other individuals considering a career in a skilled trade,
- have demonstrated exemplary effort and success while in the high school, and
- demonstrate suitability for an apprenticeship in Manufacturing both academically and technically.
Application Package Submission
Candidates must prepare and submit an application package to include:
- Name and contact information,
- A statement demonstrating suitability for this award; references from at least two of: employer, teacher/instructor, fellow student(s),
- An academic transcript, and
- An outline demonstrating suitability for this scholarship and award.

Award presentation date:
Scholarships will be awarded on May 13, 2010 at The Centre’s Skilled Trades Graduation event.
About the scholarship:
Ethel Gardiner’s support and commitment to adult education was demonstrated through her tenure as member and Chair of the Board of Directors of The Centre from 1998 to 2006. She was also a teacher for 39 years and a school trustee for 11 years (six of those as Chair of the Halton District School Board). In 2004, she won the prestigious Dr. Harry Paikin Award of Merit and the Halton District School Board Award of Excellence for her contribution to public education. |
