Local champion announced as 2009 Fellow of The Centre
Burlington, ON: The Centre for Skills Development & Training recognized Dr. Joey Edwardh as a Fellow of The Centre at the sixth annual “Celebrating Success” event, held last week at the Holiday Inn Select Oakville at Bronte Hotel.
“Dr. Joey Edwardh has been an outstanding friend and supporter of The Centre for many years,” said Kathy Mills, The Centre’s Chief Administrative Officer. “She has consistently lent her own support and the support of her organization, Community Development Halton and Volunteer Halton, to assist The Centre in its growth. Her efforts embody what the Fellow of The Centre is all about.”
Dr. Edwardh, Executive Director of Community Development Halton, was one of the original members of the board of directors when The Centre was incorporated in 1998. Although she has retired from the board, she continues to play an important role as a Centre partner and supporter.
Established in 2005 as the Fellow of the Bay Area Learning Centre award, the newly expanded Fellow of The Centre award recognizes and honours individuals who have used their knowledge and networks to advance The Centre’s learning partnership throughout Halton and beyond. Dr. Edwardh joins the ranks of other Centre Fellows: Burlington Mayor Cam Jackson, Rudy Reimer Sr., Kevin McAleese, Leo DeLoyde, and Jennifer Patterson.
The Celebrating Success event was created to acknowledge the many successes of clients who have worked with The Centre to achieve their career or training goals. Elected officials, representatives from all levels of government, business owners, and community members from across Halton were on hand to hear success stories from some of The Centre’s clients.
Speakers who shared their success stories at the event included:
● Francois Garafalo, a previous client of the Employment Services Department ● Katharine Kennie, a graduate of the Women in Skilled Trades program and scholarship winner
● Gayane Petrosayne, a graduate of the Enhanced Language Training program
● Barbara Love, Vice President of CIPF (Canadian Investor Protection Fund), a client of Corporate Services
The Centre for Skills Development & Training was established as a not-for-profit incorporated affiliate of the Halton District School Board in 1998. Today, The Centre is located at the Bay Area Learning Centre at 860 Harrington Court in Burlington, with six satellite locations in Halton and Mississauga. Programs include skilled trades training, employment services, services for newcomers, and corporate development. More information about The Centre can be found at www.thecentre.on.ca.
