The Centre welcomes Mohawk College as a new partner for Women in Skilled Trades program
Burlington, ON: The Centre for Skills Development & Training is accepting applications to its popular Enhanced General Carpentry for Women course. Enhanced General Carpentry is offered by The Centre through the Women in Skilled Trades program, in partnership with Mohawk College/STARRT Institute, RESCON (Residential Construction Council of Ontario) and the Government of Ontario.
Mohawk College/STARRT Institute is a new partner for 2009. They will provide four weeks of basic plumbing training as part of the course at the newly transformed Stoney Creek Campus.
“Now is a great time for women with an interest in the trades to train for a dynamic, long-term career,” said Kathy Mills, Chief Administrative Officer for The Centre. “The Centre has always offered relevant, high-quality instruction. Our new partnership with Mohawk College will mean additional instruction in a new area—plumbing—and a multi-faceted learning experience.”
The program accepts up to 22 women each year. Eligible students receive funding from the Government of Ontario for tuition, books, tools and equipment. The course features 28 weeks of in-class training in construction techniques and theory, including the four weeks at Mohawk College/ STARRT Institute. Students also work with The Centre’s staff to find paid placement in their field, possibly leading to full-time employment.
“Mohawk is very pleased to be working collaboratively with The Centre in creating skill training opportunities for women through the Women in Skilled Trades program,” said Cheryl Jensen, Vice President, Technology, Apprenticeship and Corporate Training at Mohawk College. “Working closely with our employer partners in the residential construction sector, we can offer viable career pathways for women interested in the skilled trades.”
