Partnership to fill academic upgrading gaps in Halton

Four partners in Halton are joining together to address gaps in service delivery of academic upgrading programs in Burlington and Milton. Currently, these communities have been experiencing rapid population and industrial growth, and individuals have had limited access to evening classes in math and English upgrading. This gap is now being filled by The Centre for Skills Development & Training, The Sheridan Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning, the YMCA Career Development & Learning, and Literacy North Halton.

Beginning the week of January 15, 2007, The Centre will provide facilities for Sheridan to deliver ACE Academic Upgrading courses in conjunction with the YMCA in Burlington and Literacy North Halton in Milton. Classess will be offered between 7:00 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. every Monday and Wednesday at the Bay Area Learning Centre in Burlington and every Tuesday and Thursday at the Employment Resource Centre in Milton.

"Both of these locations are ideal because they're central in their communities," says Nancy Moore, Senior Programs Manager at The Centre. "This makes it easier for people in Burlington and Milton to get to the ugrading they need."

The program will enable participants to obtain the requirements for entry into college post-secondary, pre-apprenticeship, or apprenticeship opportunities. It will be open to individuals who cannot participate in day school upgrading courses, or who are unable to meet entrance requirements for college post-secondary institutions or apprenticeship training programs.

"This initiative is noteworthy because it is a true partnership of organizations fulfilling a need in the community," says Kathy Mills, Chief Administrative Officer at The Centre. "We all bring a piece to the table that we could not have done on our own."
