Job Shop program improves odds of finding work
When Deepa Bharaj became unemployed several months ago, she knew she needed help with her job search skills. "I was sending out lots of resumes but not getting any results. I knew I needed a more effective way of finding a job."
She joined Job Shop, a two week course offered by The Centre for Skills Development & Training in Oakville. It is an intensive, no-fee service for unemployed adults who have a specific career goal but are having trouble finding a job.
"Most people looking for work only surf online job boards or scan newspaper classifieds," says Connie Cousins, Coordinator for Job Shop. "But they’re missing 85% of open positions in the marketplace."
Participants in the Job Shop program learn to identify the most effective ways to penetrate the hidden job market, those jobs that are unadvertised. They learn the ins and outs of company research, how to get over the fear of cold calling, the best way to focus their resume, and how to improve their personal networking. Lots of practice and encouraging feedback is provided throughout the program.
"One of the most important parts of the program is the development of a job search activity plan," says Cousins. "Having daily activity targets helps job seekers keep focused and shows them what kind of progress they’re making."
When participants see the alternatives and possibilities in the Job Shop searching process, they develop the courage to be proactive and go after the job they want instead of only reacting to job postings.
Deepa Bharaj says she’s getting more interviews now and that makes her more confident. "With the skills and coaching I received at Job Shop, I’ve got a spring in my step that will certainly be an asset when I walk into an interview."
