New Trades Program A Win Win

Burlington, ON - The Centre for Skills Development & Training (The Centre) is proud to announce the launch of an exciting new career training opportunity for youth: The Machinist and Millwright - Skills Link Program.

This new program, which represents the most recent in a series of collaborative partnerships formed by The Centre with both government and industry, will provide 20 young men and women between the ages of 16 and 30 with the opportunity to train for rewarding manufacturing industry careers in Machinist and Millwright related positions.

With a start date of May 31, 2004, the program features 24 weeks of in-class skills enhancement, followed by 4 weeks of “hands-on, on-the-job experience” and 20 weeks paid work placement. The in-class portion of the program will take place at The Centre, while the on-the-job experience and work placement portions will be provided through The Centre’s various industry partners. Tuition sponsorship and income support will be provided to qualified candidates by the Government of Canada, through the federal Skills Link program.

“One of the things we’ve been hearing a lot lately from manufacturers is that while there is an increasing number of individuals applying for entry level positions, too few have the technical and employability skills necessary to succeed in these positions,” says Tom Logan, Manager, Trades and Technology at The Centre. “Through our close relationship with companies in the industry, what we have been able to do is to create a program that meets the needs of both students and employers. Our students get the education and experience they need to succeed while industry gets access to a pool of potential employees with the combination of technical and employability skills they’ve been looking for. It’s a real win-win. Given the role that manufacturing plays in the economy of this region, career prospects for those with this combination of skills and experience are quite promising indeed!”
