The Malton location of The Centre for Skills Development
& Training provides residents of Northern Mississauga and the
surrounding area with easy access to our Career Possibilities for Newcomers program.
Eligibility
- Unemployed (or working 20 hours or less)
- EI, Reachback, Landed Immigrant, Refugee Status, Canadian Citizen
- Cannot be on maternity leave
- New to Canada (less than 4 years)
- ESL is benchmark 5 or higher
- 18+ years old
- High basic level of computer skills (MS Word & Internet)
- Can attend every day, on time
Client Profile
- New career (changing careers in Canada)
- First time worker (e.g. stay at home mom, young person) and doesn’t know what to do
- Internationally trained and wants to stay in same field/job, but doesn’t know how to proceed - how to reach career goals in Canada
- Internationally trained and wants to know what other possibilities are available with his/her skill set, education, etc.
About the Program
- 3 weeks full-time
- One new program session per month
- FREE (Funded by Service Canada)
- Will help newcomers determine how to start their career in Canada, or what other possibilities are available to them with their current experience, education and skills; or for newcomers who are unsure of what to do or who do not have a clear understanding of their skills and interests
- Program includes: Group facilitation and individual career counselling; formal and informal career assessments to determine skills, interests and abilities; occupational and labour market research; networking and telephone skills; Canadian workplace culture; career decision making; resume development; action plan
Clients who join and complete the program will be eligible to have their academic credentials evaluated FREE OF CHARGE by WES (World Education Services).
