Discover the history, honour the legacy

February is Black History Month around the globe. In Canada, events and ceremonies are being held to honour the legacy of Black Canadians and all they have done—today and in the past—to help make Canada such a culturally rich nation.

I encourage you to explore events being held in Halton and surrounding areas in honour of Black History Month. Have a look at the Citizenship and Immigration Canada website, contact your local library or museum, or read your local newspaper to find out more.

This month, please also take a moment to recognize the Canadian flag. February 15th marks the 45th anniversary of the date the National Flag of Canada was first raised on parliament Hill and across Canada. To learn more about the history and symbolism of the flag, go to www.canadianheritage.gc.ca.

All newcomers to Canada need help when it comes to understanding Canadian culture and history, and settling into their new home. A Settlement Information Specialist can provide the information, referrals and support each newcomer needs. Visit the Settlement Information Specialist page on The Centre website to learn more.
