Helping women make Halton their home
International Women's Day, March 8, 2009

The Centre for Skills Development & Training is proud to recognize International Women’s Day on March 8.

Canada is a land of opportunity. Each year, our country welcomes hundreds of thousands of newcomers from all parts of the globe. In 2008, almost 250,000 permanent residents arrived in Canada.More than 110,000 of them settled in Ontario.*

Moving to a new country can be an exciting but scary experience. For women coming to Canada, the experience can be filled with questions: Where will I send my children to day-care? Will I be able to find work? Are my English skills good enough to get a job? Where can I get help?

Whether they arrive in this community with their families, with their spouses or on their own, women need help in settling into their new home. Staff at The Centre have access to the information and community agencies that newcomers need to know about to build a successful future in Halton.

How can The Centre help women who are newcomers to Halton? We provide:

  • Settlement support: Our Settlement Information Specialists work one-on-one with newcomers to help them integrate into the community. Appointments are available in the daytime or evening. There is no charge.
  • Help looking for work: Our Employment Resource Centres are located in Burlington, Georgetown, Milton and Oakville. These services are available at no charge to anybody who is looking for a job.
  • Skilled trades training: The Centre’s Enhanced General Carpentry course for women is a part of the Women in Skilled Trades program, funded by the Government of Ontario.

Women are an integral part of the community that The Centre serves. We are honoured to help them and their families adjust to life in Canada. We are proud to partner with the federal and provincial governments to deliver our services, and to join organizations around the world in celebrating International Women’s Day.
